What's new in new version of one of the most popular file managers?
Unicode.
TC 7.5 will be supporting unicode almost completely (that may be called the most important change in the upcoming version). Unicode file names will be definitely supported as well (now it is supported through Windows compatibility functions). Unicode will be supported by both FTP-client and all internal TC instruments (e.g. files comparison based on filename). Renewed plugin interfaces wil support unicode as well - there will be 2 functions for all API functions: current and new to wprk with 2bite encodings. You won't have to rewrite existing plugins, and compatibility with previous versions will be excellent. Unicode for built-in ZIP archiver won't be supported. As far as I know specification of this archiver supports only 1bite encodings.
Possible side effect of TC "unicodization" is refusal to support OS Win9x. That makes no worries to the majority of users, but an amazing fact is that Windows 3.x support (16bit OS by the way) was removed only in TC 7.0. And versions with fixed bugs are only released from time to time.
Disk burning
Many users are aware of TCburner plugin (or CD/DVD Burning Plugin), which fulfilled its function of disk burning not that bad. Alternative plugins Complex CDBurner and Neropanel are either not free (the first one), or require Nero installed (the second one correspondingly). It's ok, but the author of TCBurner by some reasons stopped development of this plugin leaving a number of bugs unfixed.
That's why Total Commander 7.5 will have a built-in burning instrument based on that plugin.
On the one hand optical storages have become nonsence with the appearance of cheap and quick flash-memory. On the other hand - sometimes there is still need to burn a CD, but not that often to install special software.
That is the reason this burning instrument is included.
FTP modifications.
Total Commander is not an FTP downloader, it's a file manager. That should become clear to everyone who complains of shortage of such functions as system shutdown after download is complete.
But despite this fact majority of TC users prefer using it as a downloader. For that reason FTP support is improved with every new version.
FTP connections manager will be improved: instead of "flat" list there will be a convenient tree - which gives an opportunity to group connections.
Another improvement concerns security. The problem with TC is that saved FTP passwords are badly encrypted (it's reminded to the user). A couple of viruses used thatvulnerability.
Now the possibility to encrypt all the passwords using "master-password" function will be included. It practically excluded "password recovery" by third party software. Master-password entry will be required when first accessing FTP and before exiting TC.
Improved navigation.
There is rather a disputable novelty: possibility to include additional panels with tree catalogues (approximately as it's implemented in Windoes Explorer). It was supposed to attractnre TC users, but the majority of old users don't see any advantages of this function. Nevertheless separate tree catalogues will be improved as well: functions for file management will be added and improved (instant renaming, complete Drag'n'Drop, copypaste and so on) + possibilities for tree navigation are are also improved (tree expansion/collapse when pressing the space button or holding cursor over the junction)).
It's hard to say if these improvements will be taken by users seriously, but there is one that is very useful.
That is so called breadcrumb - navigation bar of Windows Vista style (fall-down menu with a list of subsidiary catalogues). It'll substitute for current bar with name of the catalogue, all its functions will be preserved.
That's not all possible modifications. There will definitely be more, and we'll have a chance to check them.
